This kid I used to know would take two pieces of bread, cram them as tightly as possible into a tiny ball, and swallow them in one gulp. Can you imagine the damage that must have done to his digestion system? Makes me shudder. And that's the story of the kid I used to know. Now let's talk about Belle's Beauty Boutique.
Before all these waitress/bartender/fashion simulation games came along, the only way for selfstarters to find out if they had the skills to succeed at their own dream business was to actually go out and start a business... or imagine really, really, really hard. Entrepreneurs these days have it a lot easier, because of arcade simulations. Belle's Beauty Boutique, from Grab Games, lets anyone find out in mere hours if they have the moxy to succeed as a beautician. If you dream of working in a hair/nail salon, put down Doom 3 and try this game instead.
Belle, who is as beautiful as her name, has saved up her money and bought a run down hole-in-the-wall shanty boutique in a dangerous part of town. The wall plaster is cracked and the floorboards are water-stained, but it's her shop. However... saving money was the easy part. Now she needs your help to take care of her quickly growing clientele.
Clients enter the shop and take a seat in the plastic waiting chairs. Luckily, they know exactly what they want, so you don't have to suggest what kind of beauty treatment would work best for them (though that would be fun). The word balloons floating over their heads will let you know which of five different treatments they need: a shampooing, a haircut, a blow drying, a nail painting, or a hair dye session. Most customers want a cool new hair style, and probably a shampooing and blow drying. That's easy - just click on them and drag them into an empty chair. Belle will start working on them and you can focus on the next customer.
Belle is so cool and cute that all the customers inherently love her. In fact, you can see little hearts floating beside their heads. (You have to love someone an awful lot for a heart to actually appear in midair like that!) But if you keep clients waiting, bored, they'll start to feel neglected. Their love will diminish, and Belle will lose tips. Luckily, you can spice up the boutique and create a more fun atmosphere that will keep clients from becoming bored. A TV or radio will hold their attention, and if you know they're going to be waiting for a while (say they want a shampoo but the shampoo stations are all full) you can give them a magazine to keep them happy. Or some tea. But that only works for so long, so keep the customers moving.
Clients who want their nails painted or their hair dyed require a little more care. After you click and drag the customer into the proper chair, they'll tell you what color they want their nails or hair to be. A tiny color wheel will appear, with an arrow spinning through the colors. (Why do so many girls want brown nails? I don't get it.) You have to click on the wheel as the arrow passes over the color the customer has chosen, or else you'll make a mistake and give them the wrong color! This accurately portrays how difficult a dye job can be. Taking precious seconds to time your click on the wheel carefully might keep other customers waiting, so be careful! I accidentally dyed a poor girl's hair blue, and her midair heart began to disappear. I gave her some magazines to read and that cheered her up again. Almost.
One more important aspect to being a beautician is where you seat your clients. If you seat two girls next to each other, they'll gossip. They say things like, "You'll never guess what I just heard!" or "Can you believe she wore that?" You never hear anything too juicy, though, so this isn't a good game if you're looking for the latest rumors. Put a guy next to a girl, and you'll see flirting! They say things like, "Flirt!" and "Flirt!" (Try to be more original in a real salon.) All this flirting and gossiping makes for happy customers, who will tip more.
As Belle's Beauty Boutique becomes more and more popular and she makes more and more money, she's able to fix the floors, paint the walls, get new equipment and salon staples like magazines, a radio, and even an assistant named Bette. However all of these things require a little more of your attention. The TV and radio, for example, frequently turn off by themselves. (Probably the ghost of an old army captain.) After a while Belle is able to move to a more affluent neighborhood where people have cars... and start a bigger boutique! There are special customers, like a matronly gossip, a grandma who takes her cat everywhere, a movie star, and a lot of high school seniors on the way to their prom. Go Bulldogs!
Generate enough love and you'll gain the ability to give one lucky customer of your choice a complete and total makeover. They'll ascend toward the ceiling (army captain ghost again) and radiate happiness with their new hairstyle and gown. This total makeover is a great way to win back an angry customer who you kept waiting for too long... and then applied the wrong nail polish to twice in a row.
Charming graphics and sound make up Belle's Beauty Boutique. I especially like the fanfare that plays whenever a customer is placed into a chair for a haircut. There are more than forty levels to keep you occupied. Each one has a certain amount of cash that Belle must collect (her daily goal) before the day ends and the shop closes. There's also a higher, expert goal. If you can make it in every level, you should open up your own salon - you've got what it takes!
A word of warning: There is one aspect of the game that isn't quite realistic. Belle flits about her boutique faster than humanly possible. Like a hummingbird moving from flower to flower, except at the speed of light. Don't try this at home. You'll create a sonic boom, friction will burn you, and your insides will be damaged by the sudden acceleration/deceleration.
