Chicken Rush Deluxe Review

When rich folk get a craving for a fresh chicken dinner, most head to a restaurant. Some go to the grocery store. But a select few go straight to a neighbor's farmyard to steal a dinner. Even laden with diamonds, emeralds, and rubies as they are, some upper class folk are cheapskates. You know it and I know it. Paula the gun-wielding chicken is tired of stinking rich cannibal chicken monsters invading her desert farmyard and chowing down on her chickenmates. She has decided to fight back, the only way a chicken knows how. With a gun.

Chicken Rush Deluxe is a Centipedes clone and the sequel to Chicken's Revenge, a game which involved chickens and revenge.

You might be unable to tell the difference between this game and the previous version... Invading purple cannibal chicken monsters conga into the farmyard and make their way from one side of the screen to the other. Most are carrying chicken-sized forks, because they haven't eaten for days and it's dinner time. If the line of monsters runs into an obstacle, such as a cactus or piece of pottery, it moves down a step and continues marching. Paula, our heroine, shoots at the monsters from the bottom of the screen and is controlled by your mouse.

(And only your mouse. In fact, if you press the arrow keys, you get the helpful onscreen message "USE MOUSE." Intenium, developers of Chicken Rush Deluxe, have thought of everything!)

This game gives you the unique opportunity to see what a gun would be like if it were designed by a chicken (I'll admit that before playing Chicken Rush Deluxe I didn't know chickens could do much of anything except peck at the ground, lay eggs, and run around in a panic if their heads were chopped off). Paula's gun is a two barrel musket type of gun, and its special bullets turn any monster they hit into cactus or landscaping pots or pieces of faux marble. That means that shooting a monster in the middle of the conga line will split the line in two, as the shot monster changes into an obstacle which immediately diverts the following monsters. The more obstacles in the farmyard, the faster the monsters will reach Paula at the bottom of the screen, so Paula must shoot cacti and pots as well as the invading monsters. This is all basic Centipede gameplay mechanics familiar to any myriapod expert.

It's easy to tell that these monsters are rich. They drop all kinds of jewels and coins when hit. Some even fly out of destroyed cacti and pots. The precious gems and money bounce around until Paula collects them or they run out of bounce and fall out of sight offscreen. Paula can also shoot them to make them explode, usually by accident. Hold onto your socks, because the gems are worth 100 points each! That's some expensive gemstone action. Chicken Rush Deluxe must have cost a fortune to make. You can really understand why Paula is so angry that these monsters have resorted to the petty theft of her chickenmates instead of just waiting and buying her friends at the supermarket like the rest of us.

Here's how to hypnotize a chicken: Hold it down gently, with its beak touching the ground. Its eyes should be gazing out parallel to the ground. Using your finger or chalk, mark a straight line (about a foot in length) on the ground away from the chicken's beak. The chicken will quickly go into a hypnotic trance, which will last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. You can suggest that it cluck and walk like a chicken, and after coming out of its trance it will do it! Act responsibly when hypnotizing chickens.

Paula has a lot more to worry about than the marching monsters. There are cannibal women which run at her from the top of the screen, like spiders, dropping obstacles behind them. There are monsters on springs, which hop in unpredictable patterns. There are monsters who pop in just to send explosive homing mice toward Paula. There are monsters riding giant rollers trying to crush Paula under their spiked wheels. There are monsters that burrow underground and peak out just to taunt Paula. And more! Even some cacti go crazy and start jumping around. Powerups (which Paula must catch to activate) include rocket bullets, god mode, obstacle destroyer, obstacle generator, and more. The most commonly occuring one is the machine gun powerup, which temporarily increases the magic chicken gun's rate of fire.

Chicken Rush Deluxe is a game with all sorts of monsters, treasure, bullets, and powerups flying about in a flurry of incomprehension. Paula can be knocked down three times before the game ends, though you can continue from the start of the last level if you agree to wreak revenge. The monsters don't eat Paula immediately; she's too tough for that. Instead they descend upon her corpse and smack it repeatedly with their giant forks. Or if they've lost their forks, they stomp on her with their feet. Twenty levels are included, each harder than the last. Before most levels begin, someone named Roger introduces a game element - usually a new monster or powerup.

This game is highly recommended to chicken owners who dislike rich cheapskates and love fast paced arcade action.
