7.1 excellent
It's Diner Dash mixed with one of those Flash dress-up games for girls. Specifically, it's Diner Dash: Flo on the Go (AKA Diner Dash 3), from Playfirst.
I travel a lot between Japan and the U.S. That's just what I do. Recently air travel has become really tiring. Not only is it inconvenient because you have to take your shoes off and take your laptop out of your bag... then after all that they won't even let you bring Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi pet bottles on the plane. And then sometimes the planes crash into the water. Not good! A friend was telling me that you can book a quarters on a freighter ship and travel abroad by cargo ocean liner. A trip from the U.S. to Japan might take one month and cost $4000, but it would be worth it. I'm not even considering luxury cruises because of Flo's misadventures.
After rescuing the restaurant from the fire-breathing dragon in Diner Dash 2: Restaurant Rescue, Flo and her cook Darla decide to experience the lust for life and take a cruise to relax. However not only do they pack an absurdly small amount of clothes each, but Flo loses her suitcase before she even makes it onboard, thanks to a rowdy crowd of angry cooks exiting the liner. Before you can say "and two hard-boiled eggs," Flo and Darla are offered jobs by the crew purser as server and cook, respectively. The price of their tickets will be refunded and they'll even be paid! Flo can buy a new wardrobe and Darla can buy one of those sandwich machines that shoots a sandwich twenty feet. And who knows, maybe they won't be stuck working on the ship for the entire game...
Gameplay is so similar to previous Diner Dash titles that if you squint you'll hardly be able to tell the games apart. The Diner Dash series involves a lot of clicking and mouse action. If you've ever been zipping icons around and clicking on spreadsheets so fast that your mouse caught on fire, then this is the game for you.
Passengers line up at the left of the screen. Click on them and drag them to a table. Some seats are red, and some are blue. (That's normal in the restaurant business.) Likewise, some customers are either red or blue. (That's rather more puzzling.) If you match up the colors when selecting a table for the couple or dinner party, you get extra money. After a few seconds, the customers will raise their hands, signalling they're ready to order. Click on them to rush over and take their order, and then click on the meal ticket spindle near Darla to pin the order onto it. After Darla cooks the salmon steaks (everyone orders the salmon steak), click on the meal and carry it to the correct table. Wait for the customers to finish their meal, then finally collect their money and bus their table. The faster Flo goes, the more money she makes. If she takes too long serving a table, the customers sitting there will become unhappy and she won't get a good tip. Click fast and chain together multiple actions (for example, take the orders of two tables and place both on the ticket spindle rather than doing each separately) and Flo will get bonus points. But she can only hold two items at once, so make sure she's got an empty hand before sending her across the deck to pick something up!
To advance to the next level, all you have to do is make or exceed the monetary goal for the current level. Do exceptionally well, and you'll get an expert rating for that level. But it gets harder fast! Diner Dash: Flo on the Go is harder than a wooden chicken. On some levels the ship hits rough waves and water spills on the floor. Flo has to mop it up. Give us a break, Playfirst! What's Darla doing while Flo is mopping? Likely she's polishing her nails or something; certainly she's not prepping. On some levels the ship loses power and there are no lights! Your mouse pointer doubles as a flashlight so Flo can see what she's doing. Some patrons have a baby and need a high chair. Luckily the ship offers complementary drinks. If a table is losing patience with poor Flo, give them a drink on the house and their mood will improve.
A lot of skill is involved in planning your moves and making sure the restaurant continues a smooth processing of passengers.
The coolest thing about the game is that you can dress Flo in the new clothes she buys on the ship, and then see her working in those clothes. The outfits aren't jaw-dropping, but you can create some fun combinations. You can also get upgrades for the ship restaurant surroundings, but those aren't nearly as fun. The most annoying things about the game are the blackout levels and the lack of variation in customers - there are just a handful of different types of customers.
The graphics are a little better than previous Diner Dash titles, but the text is a bit pixelly and hard to read. Likewise, most of the animations look like they're missing a few frames. If you ever go back in time to 1990 and see that Kid 'n' Play cartoon from NBC, you'll know what I mean. I like waving the mouse over the customers waiting to be seated. They look so happy when they think they're going to get a seat! Suckers!
